I haven't really paid attention to Blockbuster's rates in quite a while, but according to the posts in the forum, it appears that they will be charging $5 upfront for a rental for up to 5 days, then $1/day after the 5th day. This deft gives the advantage to the independent video store as we have found that the majority of customers really only want to keep a rental overnight and some possibly 2 nights. Offering shorter rental periods for less money is the niche that independents can use as a marketing tool against blockbuster.

I currently do 2 or 5 nights depending on how old the title. Most of my customers prefer at least 2 days and the ones who ask about 1 day rentals understand when I explain to them that I have found that for most of my customers 1 day is not enough. My catalog titles are all $2 so I have an advantage there.
On a side note I was out movie shopping for the store last night and the owner told me that he had heard that 1 of the 2 Blockbusters in my area will be closing. I asked if his source was credible and he said it was an employee from one of those stores but they did not know which one was closing. I'll believe it when I see it but I still have hopes

A former DM was giving me the skinny on all of this. Basically, you need to find out if a store manager is running two stores. If that's the case, then one is definitely being shut down. You might want to call the landlords.
It's funny. They lost half of their customers after the "end of late fees." Now they are going to lose the other half.

As far as I know both stores have seperate SM's. One has been with the company 20 years and the other 12 or so. I have heard from one employee of the closest one that the Sheetz here is getting a blue box. Sheetz is located right across the street from them. Besides Redbox I am there only competitor. The other one in the next town is located next to the movie theater (which is currently closed for renovations) and there main competitor is a Movie Gallery that is basically a ghost town and will probably be part of one of the rounds of closures.

How deep are they willing to dig themselves into this hole? Raising prices is not going to help them.
I just found out today that the BB in the next town is closing on March 16th. Does not really help me right now but maybe in the long run since that town will be left with a dying Movie Gallery and 2 Redboxes. It depends on how far people are willing to drive to get a big New Release if Redbox is out.

I stopped by our local BB to return a movie that someone had mis-dropped at our store. They had some sort of memo or contract taped to the front door with the new late fee rule highlighted. It didn't really come across in a very positive way towards the customer.
They are close to us, so it might help us. But right after that I saw one of our best customers using the Red Box at the grocery store....

my guess is that they are going to slowly replace their stores with their blockbuster branded vending machines and say the consumer did this to them by choosing $1 overnight rentals from the machines as opposed to renting them in store.

I've been told that there is supposed to be 1 going in the local Sheetz, right across the street from their Berwick store! I won't be surprised if they shut down that store soon after.

I have always done business that revolved around the KISS system: Keep It Simple Stupid! Their pricing structure has always been a confusion disaster. Most renter are just confused with what movie they really want to watch. Add a confusing rental structure on top of that? Geesh, even when they brand their "gumball" machines with the BlockBusted name, that should be enough for people to turn and run from them after this. I feel sorry for those that bought into the franchise.
