"Offering your customers fewer choices is almost always a bad business decision."

I don't know about that. My shop doesn't carry any mainstream stuff and we do just fine. None of my customers would choose a FS version over a WS version - ever. In fact, they complain if I have pan & scan versions. The only way we carry FS is if it's the only way the film was released (Hard Times, for example).

It will also be a cold day in hell when I step foot into a Wal-Mart for any reason.

rant: Off

chooses not to carry the Fullscreen version of "The Man" which is a comedy that can be enjoyed by an entire family in front of their 27" TV.

The studio did not offer a fullscreen version of "The Man". Walmart had no option in this instance.

I don't really care why people want Fullscreen.  All I know is that they do

Yes FS SUCKS!!! but I have to agree with jk. I tried EVRYTHING to get people to take WS instead of FS, but they just wouldnt do it.  I used to be 50-50 on NR's, now since more ppl want FS I order a 80-20 split.  I think most of has to do with the fact they they are used to the full picture from the VHS days.

PPl just dont like change, I just can't wait to start explaining the new dvd's (BlueRay or HD-DVD) and how they need to have a new dvd player to watch XXXXXX  dvd cause it wont play in the old ones.  I can hear the complaints NOW!!!    8O

ive referred a lot of people on this forum to a site called widescreen.org. This site is one of the best out there for explaining the difference of f/f to w/s.  widescreen.org/examples   shows the difference between the two. Printing out one of these example pages makes a big impact in your store if you are wanting the customers to learn about w/s and offering them more for their money.

We used to do a 50/50 split on fullframe copies, then it started to go 2:1 in favour of widescreen. About a year ago, we started bringing in only w/s.

Yes, you get black bars on a square tv, but you are gaining more. We have a 13" square tv in the bedroom, and if we were to watch a movie, it would still be widescreen, because you miss out on sooooo much of the movie. I wont even take home the fullscreen versions of the movie if i want to watch that movie, cuz i really hate not seeing the full picture.

Our full frame stock of movies arent worth as much as the widescreen, because the demand for them has vanished, kind of like the demand for vhs. If we cant get our customers to accept change of f/f to w/s, how the hell are we going to get them into blu-ray, like videovault said.
When we first introduced dvd, we had customers bring up the dvd case and say that they want this movie, but on vhs.......

That's right - only WS on "The Man".  Frankly, my favorite is when the movies are released with both versions on one disc (or 2 as Disney has done).  This way I don't have to fret about how to split the order between the 2 formats AND the customer can choose what they want to watch at home.  Perfect!

To my knowledge, when only one format is released it is always WS.

Here's a good one for the FS enthusiats - Ask them if they buy FS DVDs.  When they say yes, ask them what are they going to do with those FS discs when they buy a WS TV....

Just don't get me started about why some movies are subtitled in FRENCH (pffft) but not Spanish.  I guess it's the influence of Quebec, but honestly, aren't there a LOT more Spanish speakers in the USA than French speakers.

I think its been said a few times in this thread, but just show your customers the ZOOM button on the remote.  That will instantly make a ws movie fs, and also show them what they've been missing.

Here in Florida I sometimes wonder if Spanish isn't the dominant language.  I bet all of the southwest, California and the East Coast up to Virginia have large Spanish speaking populations.  If your area isn't home to a lot of Spainsh speakers yet, it will be soon.

I do believe that Canada requires that French be available on the DVDs up there.  Unless the studio wants to make a seperate disc for Canada I guess they just put French on our discs.  I was just saying that it would seem to me that with the large Spanish speaking population in the USA the studios would at least make subtitles to satisfy that market.
