BTW, Count...

Rufusjack has found a way to be successful with 2 day NR rentals.  For some of us, because of our market, 1 day NR rentals works out best.

BUT -- and this is a big "BUT" -- if you are going to do 2 day NR rentals, you need to be committed to have very good depth on your titles.  If you do not stock deep enough, it will do you much more harm than good and you will risk losing customers instead of keeping them.

I think Ruf would agree with me on that.

Can you elaborate on the "showing free movies"?? I thought this was not allowed, but the new building that we bought is so huge, we are thinking about it (only possible legal problems stop us)...especially if we rent out one of the rooms to the haircutting people...whoever comes with them will want something to do...either watch movies or browse the web...

Thanks,

I believe renting a room is fine, and if a movie is lying around with a dvd player and tv...

We show free movies outside in the parking lot behind our store one Friday night a month.  Personally I feel if you're not charging for them you have the right to do what you want with your product, but if you feel uncomfortable about that there's a huge list of public domain films that you can do what you will with them.  I have a link somewhere, and will try to find it.  We usually have between 200 - 300 people show up and make a huge party out of it.  Kills the Friday night business, but it's awesome publicity!

Three black studio SUVs are on their way to your store now.  Put your DVDs on the floor and back out with your hands in the air where they can see them.

I haven't seen any problems in recent history in regards to showing movies to the public.

Having said that, it is illegal, regardless of whether or not you charge for it.  Copyright laws prohibit "public performance"...there is no stipulation as to whether or not a fee is attached to it.

Years ago, there was a bit of a crackdown on this.  Libraries and bars ended up mixed up in the fray as well.

Of course, PD product is fair game for this type of activity.

Usually, no one gets in trouble until someone files a complaint over it...and a lot of times it is the theater owners who do so.
