I used to be a correction officer as well as a street cop. If I learned anything its 1:The bad guys are always more resourceful than you can imagine when finding ways to break the law, 2:The bad guys are always more resourceful than you can imagine when finding ways to profit from said crimes, 3: The good guys are always less resourceful than you can imagine when trying to fight said crimes. Nothing against my former brothers in blue, its a numbers game; there are a lot more black hats than white ones out there. The fact that the bad guys have more to gain and a lot more to lose doesn't tend to hurt their creativity either! Unfortunately, Silva, it really is a losing battle for law enforcement. For IVRs its more a Darwinian thing; survival of the fittest, if you will. Undecided

Satellite Piracy was VERY rampant no so long ago. Now its almost obsolete. Direct TV tightened there security and charged web sites, owners , dealers etc. with hefty fines. Dish network recently did the same.

Keep in mind that security was not the only solution here. There was a reported Direct TV hack, not long after new countermeasures were introduced. The hacked leak / leaker was immediately imposed with a court order and thus fined. Any subsequent leaks / leakers suffer the same immediate fate.

I can not see why the Movie Studios have and are not doing the same.

One BIG difference is that satelite piracy was big when people actually had satelite receivers. Those big ugly dishes pulled wide open video feeds from space, much like "free" antenna television; no way to prevent taping. Direct TV and Dish are digital services, which are computerized and controlled. They now have the capability to copy block the signal and monitor what happens from end to end, and therefore they could know who was circumventing their system and prosecute.

DVDs have "copy protection", but since any technology can be thwarted, there's no way to control what happens with the disc once it is shipped. The only way I can think for the movie studios to take more control would be to stop making DVDs and stream everything directly into customers' homes. Goodbye IVRs, hello Netflix!

I don't mean to sound defeatist, but sometimes you've just got to accept when something's out of your control. I'm concerned for your health, Silva. You might be on your way to an ulcer or two!

You are completely missing the point. I already explained why satellite piracy is ALMOST non nonexistent. Please read my original message again. Sorry if my grammar does make sense.

F.Y.I I am relating to Dave, Charlie and Bev. Smiley

I had to come back to edit this message. I hate to do this but WHY are you talking about something you obviously know nothing or little about ? When I do not know something I generally just keep quiet.

Ouch! (not really) That reaction seems a bit much, though. I'm a big boy so I won't cry too long.

You say I missed your point so what's yer point, then? I'm just not getting what you want the studios to do?? You keep complaining that no one is putting a stop to the piracy, what's your "magic bullet"??

I gotta go. I just finished downloading Source Code and I've got popcorn in the microwave!

How was Source Code ? I have been wanting to watch that.

OK you called my bluff, I didn't download it. Apparently I'm not as smart as the average 5th grader. I've looked but can't seem to find the easy downloads that it seems everyone is tapping into, I know they're out there. I guess I'm too honest? Grin

I've heard of a bill or two floating around Capitol Hill here in the states that would allow the feds to track and prosecute these pirates, and would make video piracy a federal felony. Frankly such talk scares the hell out me because if they can snoop in the bad guys computers they can pry into my life too!

It was not and had nothing to do with government that practically eliminated satellite piracy. The companies Bell, Dish, Direct TV are the ones who hired lawyers to prosecute and lay charges.

I still can't understand why none of the studios have not done the same ?

There MUST be  a reason ? Could someone be some how profiting from all this Huh

Big brother wants to look into the internet piracy themselves. They seem to really like control.  The satelite companies had control of their product from transmission to viewing, so they had a leg up. As to the studios tracking the pirates themselves - well, you may be on to something with your question about someone profiting!? I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but you may be right. As you said in an earlier post, someone somewhere always profits. There may, of course, be a possibility that the studios are lobbying congress behind the scenes so that they don't look like the bad guys?

I have to wonder if they are afraid of the same kind of s**t storm RIAA caused with those mp3 lawsuits?
