I had a 'big-mouth' in my store today who tried to convince me that he could legally make copies of a dvd if he left off the table of contents. I admit I didn't understand about 2/3rds of what he was spouting off about (lots of technical mumbo-jumbo) but he was adamant about it. Is there anyway this could be true?
He also said that companies like Sony farm out their disc replication to individuals. The person gets a master dvd and blank discs with legitimate label affixed. The 'farmer' replicates said dvd and ships back the dups but is allowed to keep the master. Is this bull or what? He talked like he'd done it for years.
I figure he's blowing smoke but most of you out there are more knowledgeable about tech stuff than I am.

Total BS. Ask him to show you the "master" disc. Also tell him that you are going to ask your studio rep about this because you've never heard this before. Total BS.

Even the smallest of companies have disc duplicators. Basically these machines will have hundreds of dvd's stacked into it and they will drop one down, burn it and print the label on it. Doing one off copies would be just plain ridiculous. A home dvd burner can do one at a time while professional machines (the small ones) do 5-10 at a time.

A cheap duplicator costs less than $1,000.

Rich.

Big difference between duplication and replication.
Duplication is basically the same as when you burn dvds on your computer.
Replication is pressing the disc using glass molds as the master. These systems are 100's of 1000's of dollars for the equipment to complete the molding process of dvds .
Studios do not use companies to burn disc, they use very large companies to replicate them.
Sony or any other studio do not use some guy in his garage burning disc.

Besides, if he was really doing this why would he need to come to a video store for his movies ?

Yeah, that's what I thought too. He's one of those people who thinks he knows everything about everything. Oh, he doesn't rent from me. He ran up a big overdue on a game one time and he comes in and pays a few cents at a time as well as buying previously viewed movies.
Mostly, I think he just comes in to talk.

I have a crazy neighbor that is totally 100% without a doubt convinced that others in our area are getting paid per month to keep the trees on their land. He tells me things about how the government comes once a month or so to verify that the trees are still there before issuing the big check for this month. It is really interesting to see what other people are out there thinking.

Your customer probably got some kind of twisted fact like that from the companies that sell programs to copy DVD's. They typically issue claims about "fair use" and such.

My girlfriend bought a copy of a program called "MP3 Rocket" years ago. The program makers said with it you could legally download thousands of songs, etc. If you've never seen the program, it's just a clone of an illegal program that you can download music with. She could have found the exact same thing that doesn't say MP3 Rocket for free and it's just another peer to peer music program. It does make her feel more justified that some website said it was legal software tho and she did pay something ($20) to use it. Shes told me that if she ever gets in trouble for file sharing, she'll use the defense that she thought it was legal because of what the program says. Doubt this would work but oh well Smiley

Oh, yeah, the fair use thing, 30 second bites of the movie not to exceed 500 of those but you could still have the entire movie. I don't know what all. I pretty much quit listening after the first 30 seconds.
He rambled on about that and, like I said, a dvd not having the table of contents on it. I guess  he meant the menu.
