This kind of deal makes tons of sense for Netflix (unless it changes customers perspective of them as being a catalog only source and causes substancial cancellations). They were never a good way to get a new release anyway. When I was a subscriber, I never even tried. It makes much better sense for Netflix then Redbox which is probably ticking off their customers with these deals.
Netflix, which generates 70% of its rental turns from catalog, has sought to increase availability of new release movies and expand its digital offerings.
It's a really different business model than any video store having customers make a huge list then sending them whatever you want. All along they should've just waited 30 or so days and bought used supplies on the cheap instead of paying anywhere near retail. Maybe they bought an extremely small supply of new product and then did wait to buy more later.
