I'm having lots of rental customers tell me that they've bought very recent movies at BB for $5 each! These are the same sorts of titles that they would normally be still selling for $15 or $16 even pv'd. Wonder what gives?

I think $5 is the present going rate for previously viewed. The REDBOX sells previously viewed for $5, so why would I as a consumer pay more?

We still get $9.99-$12.99 for the newer titles although those prices net lower with our bundle pricing.

Given that I closed my store, the most I can do is contribute as a 'consumer'. Keep this in mind for my future posts. As a consumer the reoccuring them of my posts will be I will not pay X when Redbox offers less than X.

Retrofit, your input is still very valuable, but if the lowest price was the foremost in all cases, there wouldn't be a convenience store in sight, just Walmarts. That said however, I'm still painfully aware of the changing landscape. I will continue to price pv'ds at 12.99 to 3.99 until the market can no longer bear it.

We have found that our $10 previewed movie sales were dwindling so we are now 2 for $10 and sales are picking back up. We are buying a lot of movies from customers for $1.00 each, cleaning up the discs and @ $5 per disc we are still making a nice margin.

My store was never an rolemodel for renting. I did (at one time) a 'huge' amount of resale. September of 08, my resale market crashed. As the recession got rolling and my sales dwindled, it became apparent I couldn't survive on resale and rental simply slowed my inevitable closure.
Old posts show I am a huge advocate of resale, but now.... As a consumer I am only interested in niche movies and 'must own' TV. The premise that I'm going to casually own movies is over. I think this holds true for others. Unless it's "Must own", people aren't buying ANYTHING. Sorry I'm doom and gloom.

I aggressively price used product to get rid of fast. The days of $14.99 ppv are over. I start mine off at $9.99 and they are usually $4.99 within six months. The only exceptions are special editions, Pixar films (sold most of my UPs for $12.99) and Criterion.

How does this figure in with the problem of customers who completely destroy a disc on the 1st or 2nd rental?

moviesgamesetc, depends on what your rental agreement says. Mine gives me the opportunity to charge the customer the SRP of a title that they lose or destroy. Theoretically, they could purchase a PVT from me or anyone else to replace it.

I recently dropped my pv's down to $5, and we have been selling so much, my sales increase has doubled. we still have $10 ones for the most recent titles but most people ignore them and wait for them to hit the $5 shelf. with so many people coming in to buy our resale business is also starting to increase. we have seen more people bringing in used to sell to us. so so far its going well for us.

Thomas, my rental agreement also states that I can charge SRP for damaged discs as does a sticker inside every case, but I'd lose more than a disc if I charged that customer $20 for a dvd that's sitting next to the counter for 5 bucks!

That's why I said I had the OPPORTUNITY to charge the SRP. I didn't say that is what I did. The customers attitude toward the transaction plays a big part in what the actual charges may eventually be.

Thomas, you are SOOOO right about the customer's attitude. There have been a few customers that I've wanted to charge a "pound of flesh" rather than cash. ; )
