Holidays are our busiest time. I have never closed for anything. I really think this year is going to be awesome. Over the past month I've had customers come back that haven't rented for years. I'm not sure why. A few said netflix sucks.

Mon Tues & Wed - All movies $1.50 Thurs & Sun Rent 2 get 1 free Fri - Rent 1 get a catalog title free Sat - Rent 3 get free litre pop and bag of microwave popcorn free Children/ Family catalog $1 everyday
Children/ Family catalog titles free everyday with each paid rental
My customers are mostly NR so I use the ones that they aren't coming in for as the value added.
ie Saturday they can walk out with 3 paid rentals 3 free kids movies pop & popcorn for $9.50.
Friday they can walk out with a paid rental, free catalog and free kids movie 3 total for $3. I'm getting them in to pay for the one I want them to and their perception is they can't beat the price.
Granted these specials wouldn't work well for a store such as genx mike's which is heavy catalog but you can do something else to give the value perception.
We also play up the fact that we check and repair every disc before it goes out so the customer doesn't have a problem like they do at redbox or my indie competitor down the street.
WOW ! Why not just pay the customers to rent movies from you ?

My revenue is UP 56% since 2007 and was UP 19% last year along with profits UP.
How does your store compare?
Any movie that is sitting on the shelf when you close at night hasn't made you a penny. If giving away the catalog title that is long paid for and was going to sit there gets somebody in the door to spend money I will do it ALL DAY LONG.

Wow! The snow fell and our store has tripled what it usually does. Our shelves were bare! It's like the good old days. I have been advertising on facebook, my space and twitter...that helped. We have had new customers and customers that have not rented for over three years. We have rented out every machine we have. It has been awesome.

Hey KingTut is your store located in an area that usually gets snow? The reason I asked is that in Chicago we recently got both snow and cold and business has been absolutely terrible the last 2 weeks

I must say that the cold weather's been kind to my store but the last time we even had a few inches of snow the day sucked. Although that was also the last Saturday b4 Christmas.

I like the rent a new release take a catalog movie free idea. I think we will try that during the sweeps month of February. (still have time to do a postcard mailing promoting it)

We get snow sometimes. Last year we got snow and it wasn't this busy. So it is looking up. Tanning has already started too!!! I'm excited.

Update on our store. The sun was shining, the snow melted, it was warm! The store still did AWESOME! I thought that everyone would be sick of staying inside to watch movies, but it goes to show you that once customers get back into renting, they get hooked on the movies! Keep the word out about the big titles that are coming. Advertise everything. It helps so much. People tend to forget about you.

The redbox in our town is NOT getting much business any more. Thank goodness. I found 2 of redbox's movies in my drop box this week. They were pretty scratched up. I don't know how anyone could get their movies mixed up with my store. Weird!

This raises a good question...If a competitors movie was dropped off in my box, I call them so they can pick it up. and would hope that they do the same for me. With rebox, who would you call?

I call Redbox. I also write down how long it takes me to get a hold of an operator and refuse to take them back to the machine. As of right now, nobody has ever picked up the movies.

I had another redbox movie dropped off this weekend. I'm not sure what to do with them. I also have just a case....I wonder if my movies are in the redbox now. I've never looked at a redbox or even know how to use one. It's right next door to us at the McDonald's. I guess I'm going to have to check it out and wait for the delivery man that fills it up and get to the bottom of this one.

Your movie can not be put in the machine. The box reads a code on the disc and will reject anything that does not have the correct code.
But this is telling you that your customers are going there.
