I've been in the business a long time but this one got by me. I received an email from my rep at Ingram. Dance Flick had to be ordered that day as per instructions they received from Corporate. OK. I ordered some, knowing that they were "Rental Exclusives". No return. etc. Now I come to find that the title costs nearly $25.00 each. I emailed my rep and told her that I feel violated and that I would NEVER order a title again that the price was not clearly displayed. Though they won't know or even feel it, I will reduce my Paramount orders for a few months just out of spite.

There are two schools of thought on this, yours and the other is the fact that we won't be competing with walmart and all of the other mass merchandisers selling it the same day.  If someone wants to watch it, they will have to rent it.  Therefore the 30 day window justifies the price difference.

I am not sure which school of thought I believe in, however for one title it's worth a test to see if it will rent better for the first month.

That price has been known for a couple of weeks. You gotta come out from under the rock a little more often.

video on demand is higher cost than video rentals in our area.  I don't view it as much of a threat just yet.

I remember when Netflix started and some IVRs said it wasn't a threat "because our customers don't have the Internet" and when Redbox machines started to pop up some said "our customers would never rent from a machine".

My point is that what might not seem to be a threat today might be eating your lunch tomorrow Shocked

This is just going to increase piracy.  In my view and that of others that I have talked with.  Piracy is mostly because of access to a movie or video.  They should eliminate the theater and every other window.  Make the movie available in all formats at the same time.  Customers who want to go to the theater will still go to the theater.  Customers who want to pay more to view it from their cable company will do so.  Customers who want to rent it will rent it.

I agree, of all of the formats to watch a movie, I believe Video on Demand will eventually be the demise of video stores, netflix, redbox and any other antiquated technology.  Look what Itunes has done to the music retail industry.  But for Sept 2009, video on demand is not at that point yet.  Therefore, I will take a wait and see approach to this test run on dance flick.
