I'd be interested in any Television Series, WWE Wrestling or UFC DVD's.  If you can't find somoene to buy the whole thing those are what i'd be interested in picking up...as well as some cases.....and that's only if you're in a position to ship them to Montana.

Yep, if you can't sell the store I'd consider buying your games.  Maybe the marquee signs as well.  Where are you located?

I'm curious... how many of you have video stores with only two to three thousand dvds in stock?  This isn't meant as criticism, I'm just curious.  The reason I'm asking is that my first store has 16,000 dvd and my second (eight months old) has 7,000.

thanks,

marc

I bought mine with 2000 DVDs, I am up to about 2500 now.  By this time next year I plan to be in the 5000-6000 area.

Bought my store 2 years ago with 3000 dvd and now I'm up to about 9,000. This does not include 500 plus games, 3500 vhs and 1500 adult. I have found out that it doesnt take long to add alot if you order alot every week.

I think someone on a tight budget doesn't have a choice but to buy one of these small packages.  The store I bought had about 1500 dvd and vhs and I bought a second inventory of 1000 dvd and vhs, so I started with 2500.  Buy/Sell/Trade plus buying new releases has allowed me to jump my inventory up to near 8,000 over 2 1/2 years.  1,500 are Adult.  My 6 month goal is get another 500 adult into the backroom, scratch my head, then figure out how I can afford and fit more in without making it so crammed that you can't see (sell) anything.  My space may demand that I peak at a mere 2,000.  Sigh...

I would not invest money in old inventory or I would only if I approach it as Buy/Sell/Trade giving a buck or less per movie.  Consider your catalog is going to rent for $1 or $2.  Certainly you can't spend more than your going to rent old stuff for considering these titles spend most of the time collecting dust just to break.  Better to put that dollar towards revenue making new releases or maybe the rent.

I think a store that can stay open can quickly develop a catalog just by being open.  Other factors to consider are location, and the market.  The days of super stores that emulate Blockbusters 6,000 sq foot model are nearing an end.  Keeping rent down is an easy way to lower costs and that means a small store, and a tight fit for an inventory or just a small inventory.

My place is busting at the seems.  If your familiar with gridwall, they have metal shelving that can hold about 40lbs, a Tv or something.  I have those on the top shelves of my grid wall, and boxes on top of those.  So I'm literately useing the space near the ceiling for storage!  Before the end of the new year I'm going to run a report to see which movies have never been rented or haven't rented in a year.  I'm probably going to box these up, donate them to good will, and write them off as a chairitable contribution.

Mind you, I'd love to have a superstore with a bizillion movies in it, but I don't see that in my future.  I see sales and resales as keeping my store open and "renting" as the shiny object to attract customers in the door.
 Undecided

This may sound defensive, that isn't my goal.  I just think smaller stores may be the trend if not closing can be called a trend. Huh

And once again, I'm not criticizing anyone on how they run their business.  However, when I see a store for sale, the inventory is almost always between the 2k - 3k range, so I have to wonder if that has something to do with it.

My second store is a thousand square feet, holds right now 7000 titles and can hold tens of thousands more.  I copped a little from Todd's store and put the movies in plastic sleeves, and you browse them like flipping lps or cds.  Works well.  Al Welch showed us a slideshow in Vegas where he made the most out of a very small space and he packed it.  I forget the footage, but it was a nice job.  You can fit more.

This flipping like CDs or LPs sounds interesting.  Do you have any pics on what it would look like in a store setup?

I have about 2500 titles in my store. My traffic is up 40% from a year ago and revenues are also running 40% ahead of last year. I can count on 1 hand the number of times in a month that a customer has come in and left without renting something and 80% of those were looking for a new release that all of my copies were already out.

What would I gain by incurring the cost to increase my title offering by 5x what it currently is?

I'm not trying to be a smartt butt here but I think size and selection has more to do with the market that you are in.

I think alot of the stores that are up for sale are a result of other factors besides how many titles they offer.

Things such as owner burnout, under capatilized, not understanding their market and offering their customers what they are most interested in and not aggressively going after their competition.

Chuck that is too frickin' funny though I have heard from a good source that a small store sometimes does as much business as a big store Roll Eyes...just remember, it's NOT how much you make, it's how much you keep that counts Shocked

Agreed.  My apologies to whatsontonight.  Trust me, if I could have a successful store with 3000 titles, I would!
