Rental Formats: DVD only--or both VHS & DVD

Hi all,
Was excited to find your new website here-----
I'm researching opening a new independent rental store in the southeast and was wondering what people think about the continuing viability of stocking VHS. While there are certainly alot more titles available in the old format I was thinking of opening a DVD-only store. I prefer their size, cost and performance, and more and more titles are being released everyday--and the cost of dvd players has gone down significantly in the last few years. [My store also will be specializing in cult, classic, documentaryand foreign titles, but I will still carry big new titles.] Any opinions, knowledge, or examples of success or failure with the DVD-only idea would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to our forum:
The fact is that vhs is going to be really hard to discard, the fact that to be able to copy in a dvd format is still quite expensive and people are still using vhs to copy tv programs the need for vhs is still there and will be for quite some time. Stats on vhs vs dvd is quite diferent from location to location to give you an example in PR is about 68% dvd 32% vhs but in miami is still 36% dvd 64% vhs just to give you one example so my advice is to do a really good market research in your area.
I hope other folks give there opinions on this to help you out.
Good Luck
Vic
