Hackers tonite tried to take over the VSC server. They managed to knock down the site for about 1/2 hour or so (they started as I was leaving work so was unprepared for them). When I got home I did my nightly sweep of checking messages, email etc and I caught them in the act.

I started to block them while simultaneously backup the most important of data.  I have no clue if I was able to get the entirely out of the system, nor do I have any clue as to whether or not they will be back. I do know it is a group called "IRAN HACKERS SABOTAGE". They also apparently got Guantanamo's website in the past few days. They didn't get that far on us.

It appears that they were attempting to use our server to hack into other larger servers to cover their tracks. As of 12:10am they have been stopped. I have a full backup of all the data before I posted this message. I am hoping they will give up and move on to easier prey. I have not worked this heavily in computer security in a few years and am sorely out of practice. What was once a daily fight against hackers (I ran servers with over 150,000 users and 12 million page views a week) has turned into a once in a great while thing.

From what I can tell their purpose is to attack websites around the world and place anti american messages on them. Here is the link to what they have done in the past few days. http://www.threadwatch.org/node/3259

Just wanted to let everyone know so if the site goes down you will know I will get it back up. I will remove any and all malicious code, etc. I will also be contacting the FBI tomorrow to see if the IP addresses and so forth I have from the hackers would be useful to them. I also have all of the code they placed on the server stored away. I changed all passwords to nonsense strings of letters and numbers.

Wish me luck. Wink

Rich.

Ah Man! GoodLuck Rich!
I appreciate your efforts very much, we're all very fortunate that you're up to the task.
Now get some more sleep.

It makes happy I have a paranoid security freak co-webmaster on the set of websites I help maintain. I am happy you were there to stop them... Way to go. Hackers are so annoying...

The site might lose it's hosting in the next day or so. I have a complete backup. Apparently the hackers hit again and installed some malicious code to steal passwords from some bank overseas. Once again I think I have it all gone, but if the site goes down you know why.

I have a complete backup and will put it back up, but just wanted to let you know why it was down yesterday.
